Tatjana Danneberg was born in 1991. She studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology (2009–11), at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (2011–17), and at the Städelschule—Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste we Frankfurcie (2014–15). She lives and works in Vienna. Danneberg has developed an original technique: she prints photographs on large-format plastic sheets, applies gesso with a wide brush, and then glues it to a canvas. Then she peels off the plastic, leaving just the pigment fused with the gesso, making an effect that recalls decals. This association helps us to understand what we are looking at. The motifs are photographs, and the colorful brush-strokes are paint. As a medium, photography is defined by its documentary nature; even when it departs from it, “reality”—the kind we can see—remains the point of reference. Painting reveals invisible details, traits and sensations of things, and makes transformation possible. In the end, it is performative: a painting is created in time, by a moving body, unlike photography, which comes in a blinding flash. Tatjana’s technique is laced with the tension between the subjective painted gesture and the objective (at least compared to painting) photograph. This subjective, performative gesture of Tatjana’s is meant to add authenticity, to salvage realness, or confirm once and for all that what we see is really happening, it is not just a hallucination on the screen.
Tomasz Kowalski was born in Szczebrzeszyn in 1984. He lives and works between Warsaw and Antwerp. His paintings, sculptures and music capture the diffusion of a centreless world and the ways in which such conditions impact our perceptions of basic categories, such as selfhood, space and time. His works suggest a conception of society where sleep, introspection, dreaming and wakefulness are equally present. They assert the unconscious as a liberating force – at once in and out of this world. His works are held in the public collections of Centre Pompidou, MUMOK, MOCAK, Frac des Pays de la Loire, Francois Pinault, Boros. He is the winner of the Guerlain Foundation Drawing Award 2014. He runs Alicja, a music label releasing various artists and his own music and audio-plays.
Şerban Savu was born in 1978. Graduated in 2001 from the University of Art and Design, Cluj. The years of Şerban Savu’s youth shall cover the period of rapid political and economic changes in Central and Eastern Europe. In 1989, when in Romania the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu was overthrown in a bloody manner, Savu was 11 years old. He received his artistic education at the University of Arts in Cluj-Napoca, where he studied with artists such as Victor Man and Adrian Ghenie. Shortly after, their work was included in the new wave of Romanian painting, known as “School of Cluj”.What distinguishes Savu from his colleagues is his realistic style and para-documentary knack. However, the realism of his paintings has little in common with socrealistic doctrine, which in the past was prominent in Romanian art. Crucial for him is the classic tradition of European painting, particularly Italian and French. In Savu’s works, we see echoes of Leon Battista Alberti’s assumptions, idyllic landscapes of Poussin and Lorrain, and finally depictions of peasants by Pieter Bruegel and Jean-Frainçois Millet. These inspirations set in contemporary Romanian landscape became part of a melancholic tale of a fallen empire somewhere on the borders of the civilized world. He lives and works in Cluj, Romania.
